Resources and technology
Our school uses modern technology and digital learning tools. Our resources help students learn, create and stay connected. As a NSW public school, we have access to shared programs and tools available to all schools in the state.
Our bright and comfortable classrooms.
Classrooms at Five Islands School are set up to support the learning and inclusion of all students. Each classroom is equipped with indoor learning areas, chill out zones, kitchen areas for food preparation or for art and sensory activities, bathrooms which include showers and change areas. All areas of the school are wheelchair accessible. Individualised sensory equipment is integrated within each classroom providing your child with an inclusive and fully integrated program.
Our technology, and digital learning tools.
At Five Islands School, we integrate ICT across all learning areas to enhance engagement and support individual learning needs. CommBox boards are used for whole-class activities that capture student attention and encourage interactive participation. iPads are used alongside a wide range of communication tools, including Bee-bots, Switch-Adapted Toys, iTalks, GoTalks, and other Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, to support student communication and learning in meaningful, accessible ways.
Therapeutic and multi-stimulant Sensory Room.
The Sensory Room at Five Islands School is a calming, therapeutic space that all students can access. Designed to support emotional regulation, cognitive development, and sensory stimulation, it features equipment such as lights, music, textured objects, and cause-and-effect activities. Classes use the room regularly to explore touch, sight, and sound in a safe, supportive environment. It also helps develop motor skills, encourages sensory exploration, and teaches valuable coping strategies in a space where students feel calm and secure.
Hydrotherapy for fun, learning and self-care skills.
Students participate in a Hydrotherapy Spa Program, a much-loved and valuable part of their routine. Donated in 2016 by HMAS Tobruk’s Ship Company, the spa supports student wellbeing with links to the PD.H.PE curriculum. Students practise gross motor, social, and self-care skills such as dressing, hygiene, transitioning safely between school areas, and developing water safety awareness. Teachers integrate Math concepts like measurement and volume, making each session both therapeutic and educational.
Bike Track, encouraging safe practices and exercise.
Our students at Five Islands School have the opportunity to utilise the bike deck during playground times and for individualised riding programs. Students are encouraged to wear bike helmets and to ride on the bike track.
Please read our Bike Helmet Note.
Freedom and exhilaration of Liberty Swing.
The liberty swing allows our students to experience the freedom and exhilaration of a swing. Five Islands School is fortunate enough to have a liberty swing that was kindly donated by Variety. It is both therapeutic and fun!
Relaxing and fun Galaxy Playground.
Students at Five Islands School enjoy a lovely relaxing birds nest swing area, a galaxy climbing web, shooting hoops with our basketball area and having fun on the slide and glide. The Galaxy Playground brings lots of fun to our students and we are very grateful to Variety Club Australia for their support in funding the construction of this area.
Trampolines for sensory benefits.
Our students are able to access the trampolines as part of their playground time and during individualised sensory programs. Our school has three trampolines that can be accessed by all of our students. Many of our students benefit significantly from the sensory experience provided by the trampoline.
Swings for self-regulation and fun.
Students at Five Islands School love accessing the hammock swings on the playground. These swings provide a relaxed environment for our students during playground time as well as providing movement breaks during class time.
Middle Playground for art and socialisation.
Our Middle playground provides a welcoming space for students who enjoy a mix of active and quiet play. With climbing structures, slides, a cosy beanbag corner for relaxing, and a table set up for social art activities, students have a range of options to suit their interests and support both creativity and connection during playtime.
Fun and climbing in Junior Playground.
Junior playground at Five Islands School is designed especially for our younger students, offering a safe and engaging space to play and explore. With a variety of options including a trampoline, climbing equipment, slides, and toys, students can choose activities that support their physical development, social interaction, and, most importantly, have fun.
POD chairs for individual relaxation.
POD chairs are available in our playgrounds and classroom calm spaces, offering students a comfortable space to take a break when needed. They provide a valuable sensory outlet that supports self-regulation, helping students feel calm, focused, and ready to return to learning or play.
