Hydrotherapy

Students from Five Islands School participate weekly in a hydrotherapy – spa program. This is an invaluable resource that our students enjoy.

Our spa was kindly donated to the school in 2016 by HMAS Tobruck's Ship Company 2015, in recognition of the fond relationships with Five Islands School staff and students.

This program is part of the PD.H.PE Key Learning Area. The students have the opportunity to practise a range of self-care skills including, practising undressing and dressing independently, personal hygiene, safely transitioning from classroom to another part of the school, feeling comfortable and safe in and around water. Students learn about water safety and build on their gross motor skills by entering and exiting the spa in a safe manner and moving around the spa, being spatially aware of the other students around them. It’s also an opportunity to practice their social skills.

In addition Teachers use this time to integrate the Key Learning Area of Mathematics, which includes measurement and volume. The students of Five Islands benefit greatly from stretching, strengthening and relaxing their muscles during their productive spa session every week. Our Hydrotherapy Program not only develops their wellbeing but also their physical and mental growth and their self-care skills.
