Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems provide students with the opportunity to develop and use their expressive and receptive communication skills. Five Islands School uses a variety of AAC systems in the classroom, which provides teachers with the ability to offer differentiated learning experiences to each student. AAC is used to provide structure and routine to learning programs, allow students to express wants and needs, and communicate with teachers and classmates, both verbally, and non-verbally.
Five Islands School uses a variety of high and low tech options for communication, including:
- Visual symbols – including objects, photographs, Boardmaker symbols
- Key Word Sign
- Core boards
- Go Talk devices
- Voice output devices, including Big Mac Switches and iTalk 4's
