Students at Five Islands School are given the opportunity to visit a variety of locations around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie through the schools Community Access Program. Each location is chosen by the classroom teacher to include goal-based and leisure activities that can be linked to thematic studies currently being taught in the classroom. Such activities include accessing local parks, nature reserves, shopping, purchasing items for the cooking program, and return and earn bottle recycling. The program is tailored to meet the individual learning goals and capabilities of its students, and prepares our high school students for their transition to post school options. The school owns and maintains two school buses to support this program which aims to develop skills for social interactions and independence when accessing the community.
